Aboriginal Healing Foundation Wiichi’iwewin Wellness
Services (2 year Pilot Project)
$399,000 NNEC established a student health unit. The WWS is directly accountable
to the Executive Director and is separate from the other student support
programs on the organizational chart, but all programs are expected to work
together to ensure student health and safety comes first. The WWS consists
of three staff at this time. Corinne Fox manages the program and has her
Masters degree in Social Worker, Michelle Derosier also has Masters degree
in Social Worker and Lydia Big George has her Social Worker diploma. A casual
traditional healer position is to be filled.Corinne’s office is in
Thunder Bay, but travels to meet the needs of the students. Michelle’s
office is at Pelican Falls and Lydia works out of Thunder Bay DFCHS.

NNEC and WWS must secure additional funds to assist the unit. Then
issues the students bring with them are very serious and the ratio of
Social Workers to student is difficult to deal with.

Part of the WWS workplan is to compile information and statistics for
lobbying purposes.

First quarterly report is to be submitted on October 27, 2004.

Department of Justice $48,858 NNEC hosted a workshop in partnership with the 23 communities it serves.
The workshop was successful, although community representation was poor.
Due to inadequate representation funding was not completely expended. The
Department has given NNEC approval to utilize the funds for student oriented
projects.
I am currently working with Pelican Falls to ensure the funds are utilized
for student-oriented programs
